February 26, 2026Against All Bombs: Jos, A Picture of Economic Resilience

In the heart of Jos, the capital of Plateau State, lies Terminus, a thriving business area that has defied the odds to become a symbol of economic resilience. On May 20, 2014, this very spot was hit by twin bomb explosions, one of the deadliest attacks in Nigeria’s history, claiming over 118 lives and injuring many more. However, despite this devastating blow, the people of Jos have shown remarkable determination, choosing to rebuild and continue their businesses at the same location.
Terminus, once a bustling hub of commercial activity, was reduced to rubble and ashes. The attack was a crippling blow to the local economy, leaving traders and business owners struggling to pick up the pieces. Yet, in the face of such adversity, the residents of Jos refused to give up. Instead, they rallied together, determined to rebuild their lives and their community.
Today, Terminus is once again a thriving business district, with traders and vendors selling their wares alongside the very spot where the bombs exploded. The resilience of the people of Jos is a testament to their unwavering spirit and determination. It is a powerful reminder that even in the darkest moments, there is always hope for a brighter future.
The story of Jos is not unique. Around the world, there are examples of cities and communities that have faced similar challenges and emerged stronger. Beirut, Lebanon, for instance, rebuilt itself after years of civil war and conflict. In 2001, New York’s Lower Manhattan was devastated by the 9/11 terrorist attacks, but it has since been transformed into a thriving business and cultural hub.
The economic resilience of Jos presents huge potential for the growth and development of Plateau State. The city’s strategic location, coupled with its rich cultural heritage and natural resources, makes it an attractive destination for investors and tourists alike. By harnessing this potential, the state can create jobs, stimulate economic growth, and improve the living standards of its people.
The story of Jos offers valuable lessons for communities around the world. Firstly, it highlights the importance of resilience and determination in the face of adversity. When faced with challenges, it is easy to give up, but the people of Jos chose to rebuild and start anew.
Secondly, it underscores the importance of community and social cohesion. The people of Jos came together to support one another, sharing resources and expertise to rebuild their community.
Finally, it demonstrates the power of economic diversification. Jos’s economy is driven by a mix of small-scale businesses, trading, and services, making it more resilient to shocks and external factors.
As the world looks to Jos, it sees a city that has refused to be defeated. It is a city that has turned tragedy into opportunity, and it stands as a testament to the human spirit’s ability to overcome even the most daunting challenges.

Jos is gradually redefining its identity — from a city once associated with conflict to a beacon of interfaith resilience. That transformation deserves recognition and support.
